A small radar company from the Seattle suburbs is having a very big week in Europe. Echodyne, maker of compact electronically-scanned-array (ESA) radars, is exploring setting up a European production line as NATO governments pour money into counter-drone defenses — and the announcement lands alongside news that Norwegian defense giant Kongsberg has selected Echodyne's MESA radar to give its widely-fielded PROTECTOR remote weapon stations real-time drone-tracking capability.
The two developments, reported within a day of each other on September 9 and 10, 2026, capture a broader shift underway across the continent: as cheap drones become a persistent battlefield and homeland-security threat, the radar and sensor hardware needed to detect and defeat them is becoming one of the hottest procurement categories in European defense.
A Radar Built for the Turret, Not the Truck

Rather than selling one radar to one customer, Echodyne is embedding itself into a weapon system that dozens of militaries already own and operate.
The specifications published for the MESA unit explain why Kongsberg wanted it on a turret rather than a fixed installation. The radar operates in the 15.4–16.6 GHz band, scans a 130-by-90-degree field of view, and updates its picture ten times per second while tracking more than 1,000 objects simultaneously — all with track accuracy better than half a degree and power draw under 250 watts. For a remote weapon station that needs to slew a barrel onto a small, fast, low-radar-cross-section target without lagging behind it, that combination of wide field of view, high update rate and tight angular accuracy is the difference between a radar that can merely detect a drone and one that can actually cue a fire-control solution against it.
Echodyne CEO Eben Frankenberg framed the deal in exactly those terms. The Kongsberg deal is the specific proof point behind a broader move Echodyne is weighing: building a production line in Europe. For a US company like Echodyne, standing up manufacturing on the continent would do two things at once: shorten supply lines to European customers already buying its hardware through programs like the Kongsberg integration, and position the company to meet local-content or offset requirements that increasingly shape European defense contracts.
