Ukraine has tested four separate interceptor drone designs built specifically to catch Russia's newest, jet-powered Shahed variants — one-way attack drones now flying fast enough to outrun many of the counter-drone systems that have defended Ukrainian skies in recent years. The announcement, made by Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara to reporters in Kyiv on August 29, comes as President Volodymyr Zelensky has set a public target: knock down "definitely higher than 90%" of incoming Russian drones this autumn.
The stakes behind that number are rising fast. According to Khmara, Russia launched roughly 2,500 jet-powered drones in August alone, up from 1,500 in July — a 67% jump in a single month for the category of threat Ukraine's air defenders are least equipped to handle.
A Speed Problem, Not Just a Numbers Problem
The core issue is propulsion. Russia's standard Shahed/Geran loitering munitions cruise on piston engines; Khmara says the newer Geran-4 and Geran-5 variants, which swap that engine for a small turbojet, now exceed 600 km/h in flight — more than three times faster than the piston-powered originals, putting them well under 200 km/h by comparison. That speed gap is large enough to close on many Ukrainian interceptor designs before they can climb, turn, or line up a shot, and it pushes the intercept problem into territory more commonly associated with manned fighter aircraft than small UAS. Ihor Fedirko, CEO of the Ukrainian Council of Defence Industry, described the challenge in similar terms to Janes earlier this year: Ukrainian firms are racing to build jet-powered interceptor UAVs of their own because "it's very difficult to intercept" the turbojet one-way attack drones otherwise. Fedirko said Ukrainian interceptors that can exceed roughly 350 km/h are able to use infrared guidance to target a Geran's engine — and that at least one Ukrainian company had already used a jet-powered interceptor to shoot down a Geran drone in testing. Fedirko noted that the drone brought down in that test was not itself turbojet-powered, so while it demonstrated the interceptor works, it is not yet a confirmed proof of a jet-on-jet kill against the newer Geran-4/5 variants specifically.
Four Designs, One Bottleneck: Production
Khmara did not name the four interceptor models Ukraine has tested against jet-powered Shaheds, and did not disclose their propulsion type, speed envelope, or unit cost. What he did specify is the scale challenge ahead: the task now is to move from tested prototypes to production runs in the thousands of units. That framing matters. Ukraine has spent much of the past two years demonstrating that interceptor drones can work against Shaheds technically; the open question has consistently been whether domestic industry can build and field them fast enough to matter against nightly saturation strikes. A four-design test is a milestone in engineering terms, but it is a starting line, not a finish line, in production terms.
Skazhenyi Joins the Fight
While the jet-powered interceptor effort is still working toward volume production, at least one new non-jet design has already moved into combat use. Ukrainian firm UV Military Cluster has begun combat deployment of a VTOL interceptor called Skazhenyi — Ukrainian for "Furious." According to the company, Skazhenyi carries a payload of up to 0.5 kg, has a flight range of 45 km, a tactical engagement range of 25 km, and a maximum airtime of 30 minutes. UV Military Cluster says the design draws on nine months of interception experience, suggesting it is an iteration on an earlier system rather than a clean-sheet design rushed to the field. Skazhenyi's vertical-takeoff-and-landing configuration is a notable design choice: VTOL interceptors can launch from improvised or forward positions without a runway or catapult, which matters for a defense network that needs to scramble against drones approaching from unpredictable directions and altitudes. Its numbers — sub-30-minute endurance, 25 km tactical range — mark it as a short-range, quick-reaction asset rather than a long-loiter picket, well suited to defending a specific city or installation rather than patrolling a broad approach corridor.
The 90% Target, in Context
Zelensky's remarks, reported by Ukrainska Pravda on August 30, set the bar explicitly: interception rates this autumn need to be "definitely higher than 90%." He noted that in the four days preceding his statement, Russia had launched approximately 1,500 drones, of which around 800 were kamikaze or "reactive" (jet-powered) types — and that Ukrainian aviation, meaning crewed fighter and interceptor aircraft, has been doing most of the work countering that faster category so far. Zelensky added that four companies currently have interceptor drones in development, a figure that appears consistent with Khmara's four tested designs, though neither official statement explicitly confirms the two counts refer to the same set of programs. The reliance on crewed aviation to counter jet-powered Shaheds is itself telling. Fighter aircraft are a far more expensive and limited resource than expendable interceptor drones, and using them against one-way attack drones — even fast ones — is a stopgap that Ukraine's own officials clearly want to move away from. That is the gap the four interceptor programs, and systems like Skazhenyi, are meant to close.
Why It Matters
Russia's shift toward jet-powered Shahed variants appears to be a response to Ukraine's growing success against the slower, piston-engine originals — and it resets the counter-UAS problem to a harder version of itself. A 90%-plus intercept target is only credible if Ukraine can field interceptors that actually match the new speed envelope, in quantities that scale with launch volumes that have already grown 67% month-over-month. The four tested designs Khmara referenced, plus fielded systems like Skazhenyi, indicate Ukraine's domestic drone industry is moving in the right technical direction. But Khmara's own framing — the task now is producing "thousands of units" — makes clear that testing success and battlefield relevance are not the same thing. For the wider counter-UAS industry, the Geran-4/5 speed jump is also a preview of a broader trend: as attack drones adopt jet propulsion for speed and range, ground-based and airborne counter-drone systems built around older, slower drone threats will need comparable propulsion upgrades to stay relevant, not just software or sensor improvements.
